"If you hire people just because they can do a job, they’ll work for your money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe, they’ll work for you with blood and sweat and tears." —Simon Sinek
Life is hard enough. Why hire a contractor who puts in more work than yourself? What I find with most practices is that they tend to recruit when their desperate. This leads to having the wrong person in their practice. As I've mentioned in previous posts, having the right person on board is imperative to running a smooth operation. Just like your clients, you can't do all of the work for them. How can you be brave enough to bring someone on board before you need them? When you do that, you can recruit the right person.
Be Transparent.
For any practitioner who "can't handle the truth," don't bring them on board. Truth: They need to do GP visits. Truth: They probably can't start with 100% of their practice with full fee, ideal clients, from 10 am - 4 pm. You walk a fine line when discussing what is required in the role and what you see as potential in the role. Talk it out, suss out how they feel about hard work. Is the contractor finding it hard to get passed the % fee split conversation? (Remember 50/50 no more, no less.) Show them this article so they can understand how earn enough money in your practice.
Ask different questions.
Get to know your applicant before you bring them on board. Stop asking your standard "how many clients will you see per day?" questions. If language matters, which it does, then start thinking about how you set up expectations in the interview. Want to know a question I use when recruiting? Check out our Instagram account here.
Learn to trust yourself.
If you're thinking you need another practitioner, you do. If you second guess yourself you'll never hire someone. Network to meet people, build a relationship with someone you'd like to work with, someday. Chat, have coffee, use them for peer supervision, treat them as an equal. Once you do that, they may be inspired to come work for you. After all, you've made it this far, haven't you?
